New Thinking for the New Year


Welcome to 2017! I’m drinking a cherry vanilla smoothie and watching TV. Rise of The Guardians is on and I know I’ve seen this movie before but you know how sometimes a scene sticks to your brain a different way… that happened to me.

Nick (Santa) is telling Jack Frost that he was chosen by the Man in the Moon for a reason. He hands the younger a nesting doll and explains that on the outside he’s big and rough. As the layers come off he’s also jolly, mysterious, fearless, and as Jack says “has big eyes”. Santa says “yes they’re full of wonder and that’s my gift to the world. It’s my center.”

That got me thinking…

What’s my center? What is the one beautifully amazing gift that I have and give to the world. What do I share that brings lightness and hope to those around me.

This past year I have gone through so much personally- changes in my business, my mom passing, my home flooding. Through it all when I reflect on my experiences what I heard people say over and over was “You’re so strong”. My courage and strength is what I offer to others. I appear to others as calm and steady when things are complex and chaotic. I can stand up to say what needs to be said to or for others. So I figure my center is strength.

It pushes me to show up and give and grow. It let’s me be a resource to my family and friends. It gives weight to the things I say, even when I’m laughing. It supports my clients in wonderful coaching discoveries and life changing clutter clearing.

New Year, New View

???? Vol.18 ???????

We spend a great deal of time around New Year’s Day thinking about all of the things we want to achieve, do (redo :)) and become.  These resolutions and goals get a lot of energy and they enchant us because they are shiny and new.  Often we reach for that something better but quickly become stuck and lose momentum.  One of the reasons for this is because there is a tug of war on the inside- past versus positive present and future.  Imagine you are trying to take a step forward, big or small, and having something holding your leg.  That restrictive force is an emotion or perspective from your past.

So in 2106 should old acquaintance be forgot?  In this case I say YES.  This year before you proclaim another goal or resolution, I invite you to have a new view on where it starts.  Shake yourself loose and let go!

 Here’s a list of 4 things to let go of this year.

1. Fear that you can’t do or don’t know how. You have learned so much over the years. From early on there were life-changing situations you survived (walking and talking surely changed my life what about you :)).  They were scary and had some setbacks but through those experiences you learned how along the way.  I have confidence that you can be successful in other future endeavors as well.

2. Thinking it’s all or nothing.  This is hard perspective to see through. There is a lot of life that happens in between the extremes.  The world moves so fast that often the Pareto Principle of 20% of your best effort yielding 80% of result holds extra firm.  Defining the result, setting smaller milestones and celebrating your accomplishments can help you work through this. 

3. Feeling there’s a right or wrong way.  Consider ending the practice of comparing your way to anyone else’s way.  You are the expert on you.  When things are working for you, you can feel it and when your life is in order it’s much easier to see it.

4. Thinking more is always more. Give yourself a break because you will reach a point of diminishing return.  Finding your sweet spot may mean that doing and having less brings you more satisfaction.  Simplifying your life and environment with clarity and an end in mind allows you to experience your perfect amount of fulfillment.  

I love that organizing and coaching can help address all of these.  In the process we talk about what you really want, how you want your life to be, how you want your space to work for you, the fact that organizing skills are learnable life skills and that there’s a right amount of stuff and to-dos to make your life work.

Isn’t that what it’s all about– living a good life and enjoying what you have when you want to.

Start Again Now: Use the Second New Year to Recommitment and Take Action

carl bard_new start 9-2-14I recently heard a radio show host say he considered September 1 to be the second new year…  I hadn’t heard it expressed that way before.  Yes! September does begin a time of change and transition in nature and family schedules but when I thought about it a little more it made sense to use this time to recommit and take action the same way we do in January.

 Have you ever wanted to just erase that failed attempt at getting organized or take back the time spent on lesser tasks that kept you from spending time with your family?  I can’t give you a time travel portal but I can share with you 3 quick reasons to take action now:

 You’re likely already making changes

With the 1st of September comes the season of change.  Some areas are seeing the first signs of fall and may be transitioning their wardrobes.  Some people are experiencing life changes of school starting and schedules readjusting to more active busy lifestyle. Why not  optimize the family calendar and set up some boundaries.  Didn’t quite hit the goal on that hottie beach body? Now may be time for some coaching to increase focus and keep you from gaining weight.

 There’s a good amount of time left in the year

Starting a new habit or reclaiming an unruly space now would give you 90-120 days to execute your plan and experience success.   Also you don’t have to go all the way back to a castoff new year’s resolution just start by focusing on what you have learned from it that can help you move forward and feel like this year you’ve had some positive results that you can sustain over time.

 One small success can bolster confidence to do more

You know how it feels when you’re making things happen and loving life?!  You’re super confident and will try something completely new feeling you can’t lose. Success shakes off fear and dependency  replacing them with optimism and self-reliance.  Yeah it’s kind of deep but it’s true.  Have more positive experiences, you can change your mind and environment!

I hope you’re looking at this month as an opportunity to do something positive to improve your space and time use.  The biggest challenge is making the first step and deciding to take action.
