New Thinking for the New Year


Welcome to 2017! I’m drinking a cherry vanilla smoothie and watching TV. Rise of The Guardians is on and I know I’ve seen this movie before but you know how sometimes a scene sticks to your brain a different way… that happened to me.

Nick (Santa) is telling Jack Frost that he was chosen by the Man in the Moon for a reason. He hands the younger a nesting doll and explains that on the outside he’s big and rough. As the layers come off he’s also jolly, mysterious, fearless, and as Jack says “has big eyes”. Santa says “yes they’re full of wonder and that’s my gift to the world. It’s my center.”

That got me thinking…

What’s my center? What is the one beautifully amazing gift that I have and give to the world. What do I share that brings lightness and hope to those around me.

This past year I have gone through so much personally- changes in my business, my mom passing, my home flooding. Through it all when I reflect on my experiences what I heard people say over and over was “You’re so strong”. My courage and strength is what I offer to others. I appear to others as calm and steady when things are complex and chaotic. I can stand up to say what needs to be said to or for others. So I figure my center is strength.

It pushes me to show up and give and grow. It let’s me be a resource to my family and friends. It gives weight to the things I say, even when I’m laughing. It supports my clients in wonderful coaching discoveries and life changing clutter clearing.

Change One Thing

Sometimes it seems like nothing works the way it should. If you’re a human, you have probably hit that point where work is no fun, relationship is a struggle and you don’t even feel comfortable in your body.

At times like these, changing your life can seem overwhelming. There’s so much to do…where do you even start?

It’s really quite simple… just change ONE thing.

Read a magazine article you would not typically even consider. Try a new clothing combination. Take a different route to work. Any simple change of scenery can shift your perspective, and has the potential to drastically transform your life.

It’s like a ship at sea…if it changes course even one degree, 100 miles later it’s in completely new waters.

Of course, the most profound shifts are the ones you make on the inside. Annoyance can easily be turned into fascination. Frustration can be flipped to become gratitude. Even anger can be transformed if you simply turn it into a song.

You don’t have to tackle your whole life at once, just make one simple shift.

And the best part is…it’s all experimentation. If you don’t like your new perspective, you can always go back to your old one.

New Year, New View

We spend a great deal of time around New Year’s Day thinking about all of the things we want to achieve, do (redo :)) and become.  These resolutions and goals get a lot of energy and they enchant us because they are shiny and new.  Often we reach for that something better but quickly become stuck and lose momentum.  One of the reasons for this is because there is a tug of war on the inside- past versus positive present and future.  Imagine you are trying to take a step forward, big or small, and having something holding your leg.  That restrictive force is an emotion or perspective from your past.

So in 2106 should old acquaintance be forgot?  In this case I say YES.  This year before you proclaim another goal or resolution, I invite you to have a new view on where it starts.  Shake yourself loose and let go!

 Here’s a list of 4 things to let go of this year.

1. Fear that you can’t do or don’t know how. You have learned so much over the years. From early on there were life-changing situations you survived (walking and talking surely changed my life what about you :)).  They were scary and had some setbacks but through those experiences you learned how along the way.  I have confidence that you can be successful in other future endeavors as well.

2. Thinking it’s all or nothing.  This is hard perspective to see through. There is a lot of life that happens in between the extremes.  The world moves so fast that often the Pareto Principle of 20% of your best effort yielding 80% of result holds extra firm.  Defining the result, setting smaller milestones and celebrating your accomplishments can help you work through this. 

3. Feeling there’s a right or wrong way.  Consider ending the practice of comparing your way to anyone else’s way.  You are the expert on you.  When things are working for you, you can feel it and when your life is in order it’s much easier to see it.

4. Thinking more is always more. Give yourself a break because you will reach a point of diminishing return.  Finding your sweet spot may mean that doing and having less brings you more satisfaction.  Simplifying your life and environment with clarity and an end in mind allows you to experience your perfect amount of fulfillment.  

I love that organizing and coaching can help address all of these.  In the process we talk about what you really want, how you want your life to be, how you want your space to work for you, the fact that organizing skills are learnable life skills and that there’s a right amount of stuff and to-dos to make your life work.

Isn’t that what it’s all about– living a good life and enjoying what you have when you want to.

5 Reasons Spring is the Perfect Time for Organizing

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe sun is shining, the flowers are blooming– Spring is back and just in time because as a southern girl deep winters are not my favorite thing.  If you are like me you anxiously awaited the defrost and wasted no time getting moving again.  Inside the house, in the yard and in the office I have found renewed energy to refresh my spaces.  I think that Spring is the perfect time to work on organizing projects.  See below my top 5 reasons you should be organizing now.  

1.It’s a natural time of change. 

The change of seasons brings good prompts to transition some things in your life and environment. 

  • As it warms up you can turn over the closet by removing what you didn’t wear this year and bringing out warm weather clothes. 
  • When the taxes are done it’s a good opportunity to shred old files and refresh your home inventory and insurance policies. 
  • Spring break is coming.  Be prepared by setting up a packing list or planning to put those extra hands to work on a bigger project.

2. Some spaces are more accessible.

Better weather allows access to larger spaces. You can bear to be in the spaces that experience extreme heat in the summer but it’s nice enough to spread items outside for a very effective sorting process. It can also have a more dramatic result in functionality and appearance.

3. You see more family and friends.

Whether it is for a spring break trip, upcoming graduation, family reunion… you will see those folks whose stuff has been taking up room in your space.  I hereby give you complete permission to return it or invite them to pick it up really soon.

4. There’s more time to work.  

Having extra daylight supports the body feel like there are more active hours in the day.  You can fit in an extra hour or two towards your project in the morning and evening hours around your work schedule.  Additionally for spaces you are working outdoors that natural light helps.  Just remember to stay hydrated and fed to have the energy to keep going.     

5. Brightening up your perspective can help with the space. 

Have you been waiting until or setting  conditions like if this then I will, now might be the time for you to adjust your outlook.  Maybe the best time to start  is now.   Shaking off the chill of winter and opening the windows can shine new light on a room revealing the perfect spot for reading or that pile of items you still haven’t dropped off for donation. Clear out the clutter and reclaim your rooms.  The space is valuable and so is your piece of mind.

Whether your next project is small or large there is no better time to start than now.  Prioritize your projects, schedule time to work on them and spring into action.
